Spartan Podcast with Steve Lacy

President Lou Anna K. Simon and MSU Athletic Director Mark Hollis talk about the state of the tumultuous journalism industry with esteemed MSU journalism professor Steve Lacy.

“Journalism is a bit like Mark Twain in that its demise has been greatly exaggerated,” says Lacy. “The core readership for journalism still exists.

“The number of newspaper copies sold every day has dropped by about 17 million on average since 1984. But now there are about 20 to 22 million people going to local newspapers online every day.”

60 percent of those, however, are the same people reading the print, according to Lacy.

“What we do have is a lot more opportunity for people who aren’t professional journalists to join in the conversation – and sometimes that’s good and sometimes that’s not so good.”
